Summary
The Shield Battery is a 2x2 Defense room room unlocked at level nine. It recharges the player's shield hitpoints by one every time it reloads and stops once it hits the maximum capacity. Due to the importance of shields, the Shield Battery has become a very popular room amongst players.
Usage
Battle Mechanics
The Shield Battery requires the player to have a Shield Generator onboard their ship to function. Otherwise, it'll do nothing. In addition, destroying the Shield Battery will not cause all shield hitpoints to drop to 0 like destroying the Shield Generator does. This is because the Shield Battery does not project a shield, it merely supports it.
In Combat
The Shield Battery should be treated as a second Shield Generator. It's in the same AI category as the Shield Generator, meaning players using AI to attack the Shield Generator will also be able to attack the Shield Battery. In addition, the Shield Battery's small size, low power consumption, and overall usefulness make it much harder to defend when compared to the Shield Generator. Thus, Armor and man the Shield Battery as much as possible.
When To Use
The Shield Battery is a welcome defense room for all types of ships. With the defensive capabilities of shields in the later levels, the Shield Battery will tremendously boost survivability against enemy barrages and ensure steady return fire. Players may not find room for the Shield Battery at first, but level 10 and 11 ships will have more than enough room to carry it.
AI
Below is an AI command that automatically depowers the Shield Battery when it no longer serves any use. Since the Shield Battery can't recharge HP past the maximum shield capacity, it doesn't need to be powered when you have a full HP shield. In addition, if all shield-damaging weapons are destroyed or not equipped, the Shield Battery can also be unpowered.
Your Ship Has Full Shield -> Set Zero Power
Enemy Laser Room HP > 0% -> Increase Power By 1
Enemy Cannon Room HP > 0% -> Increase Power By 1
Enemy Craft Count > 0 -> Increase Power By 1
None -> Set Zero Power
Crew Interactions
The Shield Battery is buffed with the Science stat on Crew. The reload reduction formula applied when the Shield Battery is buffed can be found here.
Trivia
- The Shield Battery was originally unlocked at level 7, but it was changed to level 9 as it was too powerful to deal with for mid-game ships.
