The Shield Generator is a 3x2 Defense room room unlocked at level two. Despite how early it's unlocked, it's one of the most important defense rooms available. In combat, the Shield Generator will project a shield that acts as a rechargeable health bar. The shield projected will absorb laser and ballistic weaponry, but will not absorb Missiles.
The Shield Generator will always start off with a full shield at the beginning of a fight, even if it has no power. When the Shield Generator is destroyed, all shield hitpoints will immediately drop to 0. However, depowering it will not cause this to happen. In addition, bullets cannot carry over leftover Shield Damage. For example, 5 Shield Damage to a 3 HP shield will take down the shield, but the remaining 2 damage will not be carried over to affect System, Crew, or Hull health.
The Shield Generator's damage absorbing properties makes it a huge target for enemies. Since most starships also have a Shield Generator, many AI commands are set to target it. Thus, manning and Armoring the Shield Generator should be one of the player's top priorities. Crew in the Shield Generator are also important. As well as having a high Shield stat, they also need to have ways to repel boarders, either with Abilities or high HP.
When To Use
The Shield Generator is a necessary defense room for almost every type of starship, especially past level 10. Its damage absorption makes it unmatched when improving ship survivability. There are not many reasons not to use the Shield Generator, and once the player utilizes a Shield Battery in conjunction with the generator, the shield becomes incredibly effective at absorbing damage.
Below is an AI command that automatically depowers the Shield Generator when all weapons able to damage the shield are destroyed or missing. Although it probably won't be used much, it's still good to have in the event you fight a Penetrator ship.
Enemy Laser Room HP > 0% -> Increase Power By 1 Enemy Cannon Room HP > 0% -> Increase Power By 1 Enemy Craft Count > 0 -> Increase Power By 1 None -> Set Zero Power
